This is a pretty good film. I liked it a lot. This movie is not "mainstream" fare but has value to the more discerning viewer. The special effects, for this genre of film, are simply amazing! It reminds me of the old days when you could watch a science fiction or fantasy movie that was not about aliens or robots or some other creature from outer space. In that sort of movie, the special effects were really something to be marveled at and coveted, and some were better than others. Some had more elaborate sets with some props hanging from the ceiling and a few little bits of sound effects thrown in here and there to make up for a lack of epic background score or soundtrack music. So, to be able to have that in a film is rare indeed. One can imagine that if one of these movies was shown in the theaters it would have been surrounded by people with ear pieces trying to eavesdrop on the dialogue so they could modify their scripts accordingly. I prefer my movies without subtitles, but at the same time, when I can't understand what is being said in a movie it bothers me. So in this case, I had no problem with the film being in Portuguese. It would have been nice if there was an English translation for viewing purposes but one can only guess at the reasons why the makers decided not to provide one.
I am reminded of some of the old movies I saw on TV in the 70s and 80s. The plots were nothing special but the actor's ability to emote and project their personalities made me satiate my desire to watch them. Of course, at that time, there were not hundreds of "talk shows" or reality shows on television to get us all worked up over some new flat chested soda pop star. That was then....
When this film was released it did get some attention in the Sao Paulo area of Brazil even though I believe it is more popular in Rio de Janeiro now. The film has been screened off and on at a few different locations including a church. I went to see it at an auditorium in one of the cities where it usually screens, and after running for a couple of years, they have added this film to their lineup. Here's a link:
The film was directed and written by Alexandre Melo who also did the special effects and wrote the musical score. I'm sure he had an interesting time making this movie.
